Planting is done by burying the seed using a special planting medium in a thin layer equal to twice the seed’s diameter. The fact that plants can live and develop in a given climate does not mean that that climate is the best. You, the garderner, must ensure not only that the plants complete their biological cycle but also that the conditions for this cycle are optimal. That is how you can get the best results. The choice of site to set up the planters is critical. You should know the direction of the prevailing winds so that you can best protect your plants. The planters should be facing south. Remember that too much wind can dry out your plants. Light is essential to the formation of sugars in plants. For fruits, the more intense the light, the better the fruit will look, smell and taste. The planter should be set up in a place that gets sunlight for a few hours a day or in a well-lighted place. A shortage of light leads to overly long stems and a loss of colour and vitality and the plant becomes weak.

The modular system of planters requires the use of a special planting medium rather than soil. One of the main reasons for using this medium is to keep the structure sound. As the medium is lighter than soil, the planters are not under constant strain from the weight of the soil. In addition, the medium ensures good drainage, good aeration and good water retention – characteristics that not all soils can provide.

Watering the plants is very important but too much water is even worse than not enough. An excess of water causes the roots to rot and the plant ends up dying. Watering must be done in the morning, or late in the evening, in order to avoid excessive losses through evaporation. It must not be done in the heat of the day. For the most successful results, do not forget to fertilise the plant, so that it can grow correctly and strongly. Fertilisers can be chemical or natural. Natural fertilisers have a beneficial impact on the environment In case you opt for a chemical fertiliser, here is some useful information. Chemical fertilisers have an NPK sign on their packaging, showing that the product contains the most important elements for plant development: nitrogen , phosphorus and potassium . There are different formulas for NPK fertilisers, based on their intended use. In general, use: - NPK 4-14-8 for species that produce flowers and fruit. This formula states that it should be used at the time of planting, as it provides the best formation and development of roots and plant structures. The high level of phosphorous helps in flowering. - NPK 10-10-10 used for species that do not flower or produce fruit, or applied to plants that have already grown , as a coverage. - NPK 15-15-20, rich in potassium, this formula is very useful, as it can also be used in hydroponic cultivation, being specifically designed for horticulture. There are also specific formulas on the market for particular types of ornamental plants. In this case, the formula is adjusted for the needs of each species. The frequency of fertilisation varies according to each species, but, generally, it should be done every two months. However, always remember: when applying the dosage, rigorously follow the manufacturers instruction on the packet.
